Box Office: ‘The Social Reckoning’ Flops With $5.5 Million Debut, ‘Other Mommy’ Tops Box Office With $27.5 Million
“Other Mommy,” a horror movie starring Jessica Chastain as a double-jointed doppelgänger from hell, scared up $27.5 million in its box office debut. Those ticket sales were enough to lead in North America over this weekend’s other new release, “The Social Reckoning,” which crumbled in fifth place with $5.5 million.
“Other Mommy” landed above expectations despite being one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year. Universal and Blumhouse’s campy thriller, about a sinister paranormal entity who takes on the appearance of a young girl’s mother, was saddled with a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes and a tragic “D+” grade on CinemaScore exit polls. (Even last weekend’s bomb “Digger” managed to earn a “C+” grade on exit polls.)
Those marks don’t bode well for box office longevity, though “Other Mommy” is well-positioned financially against a modest $18 million budget. The movie collected $17.69 million at the international box office, bringing its global tally to $45.19 million.
“Horror movies are generally immune to a negative reception, but this is extreme,” says analyst David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe. “Business is going to drop sharply.”
THE SOCIAL RECKONING’ CRUMBLES
“The Social Reckoning,” too, will have to combat poor word-of-mouth in the coming weeks. That’s a problem because Sony’s Facebook drama didn’t incentivize crowds in the first place. The R-rated movie, written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, was projected to open to $7 million to $8 million.
Even those returns wouldn’t have come close to 2010’s “The Social Network,” which opened almost exactly 16 years ago to $22 million, not adjusted for inflation. Overseas, “The Social Reckoning” flatlined with $3.5 million from 29 markets for a $9 million worldwide start.
Critics and audiences were mixed on “The Social Reckoning,” which holds a 54% on Rotten Tomatoes and tepid “B-” grade on CinemaScore. The movie, picking up years after the first, follows a Facebook engineer (Mikey Madison) who leaks thousands of internal documents to a reporter (Jeremy Allen White) to blow the whistle on the company’s dark practices. Ticket buyers were mostly older males, a demographic that’s been slow to return to theaters since the pandemic.
Comparisons between the two films were always going to be tough because “The Social Network” is widely considered one of the best films of the 2010s. That film, directed by David Fincher, written by Sorkin and starring Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg, ended up earning $224 million globally and won four Oscars (including one for Sorkin’s screenplay). Because of the first film’s pedigree, and the fact that Fincher and Eisenberg didn’t return for the second, Sony tried to distance the association between the movies and called the follow-up a “companion piece” rather than a sequel.
That’s also likely why the studio economized on the budget; “The Social Reckoning” carries a $30 million price tag while “The Social Network” cost $40 million.
“Stories about corporate intrigue, money and power have found a home on TV. They lack the cinematic qualities that excite big-screen audiences,” Gross says. “The production cost was reasonable. But it’s still a lot of money to recoup at these box office levels.”
DIGGER’ CRATERS
Meanwhile, “Digger” cratered in its second weekend with $3.2 million from 3,321 theaters, a 60% decline from its dismal $8 million debut. So far, the Tom Cruise satire has limped to $14 million domestically and $35.3 million globally. Warner Bros. spent above $160 million to produce the film, which is shaping up to be one of the biggest bombs ever, with projected losses of $245 million theatrically.
Given the scale of the disaster, Hollywood stars have been coming to the defense of “Digger,” with bold-faced names like Anne Hathaway, Jane Fonda, Guillermo del Toro and Mandy Patinkin praising the film and encouraging audiences to go to theaters. (Spoiler alert: It hasn’t worked.)
Elsewhere, holdovers including Amazon MGM’s Colleen Hoover adaptation “Verity,” Sony’s “Resident Evil” reboot and Paramount’s Brad Pitt-led “Heart of the Beast” rounded out the box office charts.
Second place went to “Verity” with $11.4 million from 3,572 theaters, a steep 64% decline from its opening weekend. The psychological thriller, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, is a win for Amazon MGM, having grossed $53 million in North America and $113 million worldwide to date against a $40 million budget.
So far, October has been sluggish after a stronger-than-expected September at the box office. Revenues for the month are 23% ahead of the same point in 2025, which wound up as the lowest-grossing October in three decades, and 8% behind 2019, the last year before COVID upended the box office. So upcoming releases like Paramount’s video game adaptation “Street Fighter,” Disney’s survival thriller “Whalefall” and Warner Bros. and DC’s comic book-inspired “Clayface” are hoping to jolt attendance during the spookiest month of the year.
Although October might not be one for the record books, Hollywood has plenty to celebrate. Domestic revenues already eclipsed $8 billion, according to Rentrak, a milestone the industry didn’t cross last year until December. With potential blockbusters like “Avengers: Doomsday,” “Dune: Part III” “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” and “Focker-in-Law” on schedule around the holidays, this year will easily be the biggest at the box office in post-pandemic times.
“Summer was a major factor in hitting $8 billion so quickly,” says Rentrak’s head of marketplace trends Paul Dergarabedian. “Fall has had its ups and downs, but things are definitely going to heat up in November, with December expected to see the box office pick up at a breakneck pace once again.”
Those marks don’t bode well for box office longevity, though “Other Mommy” is well-positioned financially against a modest $18 million budget.
主干| Those marks don’t bode well for box office longevity.(这些评分对票房长线不是好兆头。)
Those marks] [don’t bode well for] [box office longevity], / [though] [“Other Mommy”] [is well-positioned financially] / [against a modest $18 million budget].
同类让步| 原文上一段还有一个 despite + 动名词:“Other Mommy” landed above expectations despite being one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year.
The project is behind schedule, though it is still within budget.
Because of the first film’s pedigree, and the fact that Fincher and Eisenberg didn’t return for the second, Sony tried to distance the association between the movies and called the follow-up a “companion piece” rather than a sequel.
主干| Sony tried to distance the association … and called the follow-up a “companion piece”.(索尼试图淡化关联,并把续作称为“姊妹篇”。)两个并列谓语:tried to distance + called。
从句 / 修饰| Because of A, and B:句首原因状语,A = the first film’s pedigree,B = the fact that…;the fact that + 完整句:同位语从句,解释 fact 的具体内容;call sth A rather than B:把某物称作 A 而不是 B。
拆解| [Because of ① the first film’s pedigree, and ② the fact (that Fincher and Eisenberg didn’t return for the second)], / [Sony] [tried to distance the association between the movies] / [and] [called the follow-up a “companion piece”] / [rather than a sequel].
结构提示| Because of A and the fact that B, 主语 + did C rather than D.:Because of the cost and the fact that few people signed up, the school ran the course online rather than in person.
Revenues for the month are 23% ahead of the same point in 2025, which wound up as the lowest-grossing October in three decades, and 8% behind 2019, the last year before COVID upended the box office.
主干| Revenues for the month are 23% ahead of … 2025 … and 8% behind 2019.(本月票房比 2025 年同期高 23%,比 2019 年低 8%。)
从句 / 修饰| , which wound up as…:非限定定语从句,补充说明 2025 年(最终成了三十年来最差的 10 月);, the last year before…:同位语,解释 2019 年是什么年份;before COVID upended the box office:before 引导的从句限定 the last year,说明是哪一年。
拆解| [Revenues for the month] [are] [23% ahead of the same point in 2025], / (which wound up as the lowest-grossing October in three decades), / [and] [8% behind 2019], / (the last year [before COVID upended the box office]).
结构提示| X is n% ahead of A, which…, and m% behind B, the last year before…:写数据对比时,用 which 和同位语给每个参照年份“加注释”,读者马上明白这个比较的分量。
A badly reviewed horror film still scared up a No. 1 debut.
“The Social Reckoning” crumbled, far below both expectations and its 2010 predecessor.
October is sluggish, but the year is still on track to be the biggest since the pandemic.
标题 vs 正文: 标题只用最短、最直接的词——‘The Social Reckoning’ Flops、‘Other Mommy’ Tops Box Office;正文再换成更有画面感的动词——scared up、crumbled、cratered、limped to。

这一节抓 10 个票房报道核心表达: scare up、crumble、bomb、crater、limp to、flatline、tepid、saddled with、bode well、recoup。
记忆方法| scare up 本来是美式口语“想办法弄到 / 凑出”(scare up some money / scare up a meal)。
常见搭配| scare up $27.5 million:吓出 2750 万美元票房 · scare up support:拉到支持 · scare up some cash:凑点现金 · scare up a crowd:拉来一批观众
同类双关| 恐怖片标题常见 scream to the top、haunt the box office,都是借题材做文字游戏。
We managed to scare up enough volunteers to run the event.
2. crumble|
常见搭配| crumble in fifth place:惨败到第五名 · crumble under pressure:在压力下崩溃 · a crumbling building:摇摇欲坠的建筑 · hopes crumbled:希望破灭
The team’s defence crumbled in the second half.
记忆方法| 在美式娱乐报道里,bomb 就是“炸了、扑街了”:a box office bomb = 惨败的电影;The film bombed.
易错| 英式口语 go down a bomb / go like a bomb 反而表示“大受欢迎、非常成功”。
常见搭配| last weekend’s bomb:上周末的扑街片 · one of the biggest bombs ever:史上最大的票房炸弹之一 · bomb at the box office:票房惨败 · the show bombed:演出砸了
近义| flop(扑街)· dud(哑弹、废品)· turkey(烂片);反义 hit、smash、blockbuster
His first stand-up show completely bombed, but the second one was a hit.
The app’s user numbers cratered after the privacy scandal.
常见搭配| limp to $14 million domestically:北美勉强累计到 1400 万美元 · limp home:勉强回到家 / 勉强完赛 · limp along:苟延残喘 · limp to the finish line:拖着走到终点
After losing its star player, the team limped to the end of the season.
6. flatline|
常见搭配| flatline overseas:海外市场毫无起色 · sales have flatlined:销量停滞 · growth flatlined:增长停滞 · a flatlining economy:停滞不前的经济
Wage growth has flatlined for most young workers.
7. tepid|
词源| 来自拉丁语 tepidus(微温的),动词 tepere(温热)。
同义替换| lukewarm(同样是“温吞”)· lacklustre(缺乏光彩的)· underwhelming(令人失望的)
The new policy received a tepid response from parents.
常见搭配| be saddled with debt:背上债务 · be saddled with a bad reputation:背上坏名声 · be saddled with a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes:顶着烂番茄 19% 的低分 · saddle sb with responsibility:把责任压给某人
延伸| in the saddle:掌权、在位 · saddlebag:马鞍包
Many graduates are saddled with student loans for decades.
9. bode well / don’t bode well (for)|对……
常见搭配| don’t bode well for box office longevity:对票房长线不是好兆头 · bode well for the future:预示前景良好 · bode ill for:预示不妙 · this doesn’t bode well:情况不妙
Falling enrolment numbers do not bode well for the university’s finances.
10. recoup|
词源| 来自古法语 recoper(切回来):re-(回)+ couper(切)。
常见搭配| recoup costs:收回成本 · recoup an investment:收回投资 · recoup losses:弥补损失 · a lot of money to recoup:要收回的钱很多
It could take years for the restaurant to recoup its renovation costs.
动词短语 hold over 有“延期、留用”的意思,a holdover from the past 是“过去遗留下来的东西”。

This weekend, the horror film “Other Mommy” scared up $27.5 million and topped the box office, even though critics hated it. Meanwhile, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Reckoning” crumbled in fifth place with just $5.5 million, below its $7 million to $8 million projection. And last week’s bomb, “Digger,” cratered 60% in its second weekend and has only limped to $14 million in North America.
I think a famous name can get people talking, but it can’t guarantee ticket sales. Take “The Social Reckoning.” It was written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, but the reviews were tepid and audiences weren’t excited. Word-of-mouth matters a lot — if the first viewers are disappointed, business usually drops sharply after the opening weekend. Also, as one analyst put it, stories about money and power have found a home on TV, so people may not feel they need to see them on the big screen. Even with a reasonable budget, that makes it hard to recoup the cost.
Last year I started a small online shop selling handmade candles. Sales were okay at first, but after two months they flatlined. I was also saddled with a lot of unsold stock, which didn’t bode well for the business. In the end, I cut my prices and managed to recoup most of what I’d spent on materials — but I learned that a good start doesn’t guarantee longevity.
