看电视剧学汉英词汇：太庙、休妻与仕途的英文表达

之前考 CATTI 买的汉英词典，闲置好久了。

突然想到，看电视剧也可以用上它：熟悉的剧情加上陌生的单词，比枯燥地背单词书有趣多啦。

这篇笔记保留原有词汇、例句和文化说明；古代制度与译法在不同语境中可能有多个版本，英文表达以本篇学习场景为准。

太庙 Imperial Ancestral Temple

太庙是中国皇帝的宗庙，后来邻近国家如朝鲜、越南数个王朝也效仿。关于古代宗庙名称与制度，需结合时代和具体文献区分；不宜把世室、重屋、明堂与太庙简单视为同一建筑的历代改名。

最早太庙只是供奉皇帝先祖的地方。后来皇后和功臣的神位在皇帝的批准下也可以被供奉在太庙。而帝王将相的神主被供奉入太庙的仪式则称为升祔礼。

很明显来自empire（帝国）

the Roman empire （罗马帝国）；

a business empire （大型企业集团）

imperial这个词学《射雕英雄传》学到了哦，意思是帝国的；皇帝的。

imperial capital：临安府 (浙江)，中国杭州市古地名，为南宋行在，即临时首都。这里补充出了临安是当时的首都imperial capital。imperial 表示“帝国的；皇帝的”，因此可以延伸出：

皇族 imperial family

皇宫 the imperial palace

宫廷生活 court life（比 imperial life 更明确）

至高无上的陛下 your Imperial Majesty

ancestral｜祖先的、祖传的

可以把 ancestor、ancestral、ancestry 当作同一词族记忆。“走在前面的＝祖先”可作联想，但不要把 an、ces 的拆分当作可靠词源说明。

哈哈哈哈哈哈哈哈😂ancestry想到列祖列宗就可以啦。

Temple

temple 除了泛指「寺庙」，除此之外也可以用来指「太阳穴」。temple 可以用于佛教寺院，也可用于道教庙宇；shrine 通常指供奉圣物、神像或纪念对象的圣所、神龛等，不能简单按佛教与道教一一对应。

My grandmother went to the local temple every week.

我外婆每个礼拜都会去庙里。

I always put some peppermint/’pepəmɪnt/ oil on my temples when I feel sleepy.

incense stick｜香、香柱

incense 的意思是「香」，是一种泛指的说法，指的可能是粉状的或是棒状的香。讲仔细一点，庙宇常见的那种一根根的香柱是 incense stick ，stick 意指「枝条」。

补充插香的「香炉」则为 incense burner。

More and more temples have stopped using incense in order to protect the environment.

越来越多寺庙为着环保不再烧香。

worshipper｜信徒、礼拜者

worship 为动词，意思是「信仰；敬拜」，worshipper 则是指「信仰者；信徒」，并不局限于特定宗教的信徒。

The worshippers gather at the church every Sunday.

信徒每周日在教会聚集。

休妻：divorce one’s wife / cast off one’s wife

divorce

这里是及物动词，和谁离婚的意思。

She’s divorcing her husband.

她与丈夫在闹离婚。

divorce除了指「离婚」以外，还可以作为「分开」或是「脱离」的意思，常常是被动哦。

He seems completely divorced from reality.

他似乎完全脱离了现实。

另外，不知道大家有没有注意到，divorce 表示一次具体离婚事件时可以用不定冠词 a；谈论离婚这一概念或用于某些固定搭配时则不加冠词。例如：

I want a divorce.

How do you get a divorce?

但是「提出离婚申请」时说file for divorce，这个固定搭配中的 divorce 前不加冠词。

一提到外遇这个「全天下男人(或是女人)都可能会犯的错」，说法可就目不暇给啦。让我们一起来看看可以使用什么句型。

薇薇安有外遇。

Charles has an affair with his best friend.

查尔斯跟他最好的朋友发生外遇。

Mel admitted that he was unfaithful to his wife.

梅尔承认对太太不忠。

David cheated on his wife on Valentine’s Day.

仕途沉浮 ups and downs of an official career

仕途多舛 official career fraught with difficulty and danger

💡 注意 fraught 的英文释义，它强调局势充满问题和风险：a situation or action is fraught with problems or risks, it is filled with them.

仕途捷径 shortcut to an official career；officialdom 通常统指官僚群体或官僚机构，并非单个“当官的人”

仕途偃蹇（就是落魄不如意） be unfortunate in one’s official career; not do well in one’s official career; have a stalled official career

从 ups and downs 延伸：常见并列表达

查“仕途沉浮”时，遇到了 ups and downs。这个表达把 up 和 down 放在一起，用起伏来形容人生境遇，也让我顺手记下了一些类似的英语搭配。

下面是这次查词延伸出的补充笔记：有些由反义词组成，有些则是两个相关词搭配使用。可以先记住感兴趣的几组，之后在剧情或阅读中遇到时再回来看。

1. pros and cons 优点和缺点、利弊

pros and cons 与表示赞成、反对的拉丁语形式相关；作为英语固定搭配，直接记住其“利弊”的含义即可，

也可以写作advantages and disadvantages(利与弊)，

当要评估正反两方意见、优缺点时，就可以使用pros and cons。

We need to weigh and analyze the pros and cons of this policy.

我们必须衡量和分析这个策略的利弊。

2. dos and don’ts 行为准则

dos and don’ts 中文直译是「应该做和不该做的事」，就是「准则、规范」之意。

The dos and don’ts of visa applications are a potential minefield for the unprepared traveller.

各种签证的规范对于未准备好的旅行者可能是地雷。

3. haves and have-nots 富人和穷人

haves and have-nots 中文直译是「拥有和没有」，在英文中，他们两个字摆放在一起，就是指富人和穷人。

贫富差距就是「gap between the haves and the have-nots」，或是「gap between the rich and the poor」。

One reason behind the increase in suicides may be a widening gap between the haves and the have-nots.

自杀率不断升高的其中原因，可能是不断扩大的贫富差距。

4. ins and outs 细节、详情

ins and outs，所有的进出和产出，就是所有的细节、详情。

Mike knows all the ins and outs of how the photocopier works. Mike知道所有操作影印机的细节。

5. rights and wrongs 是非曲直

rights and wrongs 指的是事情所有正确与错误之处，重点是事情的是非曲直，而非所有客观事实。

They are disputing the rights and wrongs of the case.

他们正在争论这个案件的是非曲直。

6. ups and downs 盛衰、浮沉

ups and downs，上与下，组合成的片语代表兴衰、浮沉、高潮迭起。

Life is full of ups and downs, and without the downs, the ups would mean nothing.

人生充满了高潮迭起，没有经历过低潮，就不会知道成功的意义。

7. back and forth 来回、反覆

back 是「后」，forth 是「前」，后与前，就是不断的往复、重覆做一件事。

We went back and forth over edits to his copy.

我们就他稿子的修改反复讨论。

8. cat and mouse 猫捉老鼠，欲擒故纵

这个片语超有趣唷，cat and mouse，就像猫捉老鼠，欲擒故纵，要让对方上钩前，故意先放鬆一步。

It’s a cat and mouse game, and the girl is still kept in the dark.

这是一场猫捉老鼠游戏，但女孩依然被蒙在鼓裡。

9. hide and seek 捉迷藏

hide 是「躲藏」，seek 是「寻找」。hide and seek 就是我们小时候常玩的躲猫猫、捉迷藏游戏。

You must not peek while you are counting in such games as hide-and-seek.

在捉迷藏游戏中，你当鬼数数时绝对不可以偷看。

10. to and fro 来回、往返

to 是「去」，fro 是「返回」。to and fro意思就是不断往返。

The bus travels to and fro between London and Brighton to serve passengers.

这班公车在伦敦和布莱顿间往返服务乘客。

11. life and death 重大的、生死攸关的

life 是「生命」、生活，death 是「死亡」，两者摆放在一起，意思是生死攸关的事。

It’s a matter of life and death, and we can’t treat it lightly.

这是生死攸关的大事，我们不能掉以轻心！

12. black and white 白纸黑字

black and white 是「黑与白」，白纸黑字，即是清楚地把事情用文字记录下来。

This arrangement concerns our rights, so we had better put it down in black and white.

这个安排攸关我们的权益，最好以白纸黑字记录下来。

13. trial and error 反覆尝试，从失败中找到方法

trial 是「考验」，error 是「错误」，trial and error，考验和错误，即是不断尝试，从失败中找到方法的意思。

She feels that raising children has been a matter of trial and error.

她觉得养育孩子就是不断在失败中尝试，找到最适当的方法。
